AIA Emerging Architect Prize and Tour_Ben Peake

BlueScope is proud to sponsor the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) Emerging Architect Prize Tour. The 2023 recipient, Ben Peake, will present a ‘show and tell’ of his work, experiences and architectural insights.

Ben was awarded the 2023 Emerging Architect Prize for his outstanding work as Design Director at Carter Williamson Architects and his commitment to social responsibility. Not only has he led award-winning projects, but he has also actively promoted gender and diversity equity within the architecture community, leaving an indelible mark on the profession.

Being awarded the 2023 National Emerging Architect Prize has been an enriching experience for Ben. “It has been a moment of reflection and optimism. Reflecting on all the clients and collaborators that have helped me so far. And an optimism that I have chosen a career path that has already been so rewarding for me,” he says.

His influence extends beyond architectural studios, with Ben advocating for positive change through various roles, including the AIA’s New South Wales Gender Equity Transformation Team and the National Committee for Gender Equity. He also advocates inclusivity within the profession through his leadership position in the Architects Champions of Change initiative and Architecture With Pride. Moreover, his dedication to nurturing other emerging talents and sharing knowledge as a tutor has earned him accolades such as the Byera Hadley Travelling Scholarship and the Dulux Study Tour.

Ben reflects, ‘We all know the profession of architecture is not perfect - the recent Diversity Survey and our Gender Pay Gap are examples of that. However, there are so many ways we can all contribute to making our profession better. It’s why I’m grateful for my contribution to efforts such as the National Committee for Gender Equity and Architecture With Pride. Both are opportunities for making our field more equitable.”

Ben’s involvement in preserving significant architectural heritage, notably leading the successful Save Our Sirius movement, underscores his impact on the built environment. His co-authored work, "Sirius" (Piper Press, 2017), serves as a testament to his leadership and advocacy.
